ALL MUSIC ARE COMERCIAL MUSIC

INTERVIEW WITH FAMOUS AFROBEAT MUSICIAN EDAOTO ON HIS MUSIC AND PHILOSOPHY

 E.P: can we know you

Answer: My name is Edaoto Agbeniyi  from Agbeniyi Awoyokun family as you know I am a musician and I have acted in a couple of films,  e.g. I was in ABOUT TO WED:by greg odutayo,  LEGEND OF OYA directed  by LEKAN  BALOGUN and MALAIKA by aisha and kabira kafidipe and other stage plays.

E.P: The inspiration for music when the you decided that it is music that could bring the satisfaction you need in life?
Answer: Like I always said I have always been a musician and afro beat is the genre later people began to call it afro folk or any other name they like but the genre that called me is afro beat with the infusion of folklores but I formed my band in June 1999 and different people have come in some are have left but it is a thing of joy that the band had been formed it is known as Edaoto and his Afro genius band.

E.P: we know that afro beat music is centered on African projection of earlier musical forms and had a forerunner in FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI what was your intention in playing afro beat with lot of folklores.

Answer:  The reason i play afrobeat is not because nigeria music is lopsided but because afrobeat called me i formed my band in 1999 and of that time nigeria music wasn't this watered down, playing afro beat on its own is a call that i answered the  reason why I play afro beat is that in the last twenty years Nigerian music has lost it form, losing the whole sense of who we are as a people culture and music wise. So nobody works on those values anymore because they want to play commercial music, I do not know what commercial music is because every music is commercial with targets audience but now to promote music you have to have big budget to promote your music. Hence most of the musicians today tends to forget about our values as a people or projecting the image of the core African values. I want to tell you when you cut yourself away from the past you lose where you are coming from for the present.
My thinking is that we should bring the past to our present so that we can further a path for our self.  If you play music that has to do folklorerish  embellishment it could allow us to know where we are coming from it is for us; for example if you look at Ghana they have  high life and fussed it with hip hop to balance it not a total break. They move from there high life and embellish it with a new music culture, slavery cannot remove the African culture, custom, music and way of life. African has one of the most advance technology I do not know what they call Ijabe, Olo, Odo which was invented by our  forebears over thirty thousand years ago  which was not known to the white man  of course we have one of the most  terrible  experience of slavery in Africa  but before  then  we have been prince and princes,  king and queens  look at the pyramid built by Africans probably  blacks  in Egypt.

E.P: But this shift towards commercial music that have no African perception is what is been celebrated by people?

Answer: Yes except for few musician who are sensible enough to play the fussion of this with African music like I always said my music is purely
African am using myself as a guinea pig in playing completely African music with Folklores embellishment      in it.

E.P: you said in Ghana we have a fussion of high life with hip hop: what stop us from using the same method music wise in nigeria because the music that can sell and bring money must be commercial really.

Answer: You see how people are so hypocritical about  how  we attend to issues in Africa let me share an example, they was a big man who came to watch my play and as I came down from the stage he called me and told me you play good music solid African music, I said talk to my manager if you know  we play great music since you are a multinational why  have you not promote us by given  us shows he said  their boss in the office knows we play good music but would prefer to promote those that have  been played on the radio. He said we don’t have followership.
Now my take I don’t have any problem with those artist that promote such music but it is the system that birth to them, the system that gave them the ground to triumph, the system that nourish the ground but if the system has been properly tailored to promote progressive music that is riched with          African music but it is unfortunate that the artist are not the problem but the system. If you see the energy put into the music perhaps if the system has been tailored to promote African music the guy would have done something great, when they sang remove your part, and trouser you won’t want your       children to listen to it but this are the guys that are contacted to play at parties and giving massive promotion and support we are not truthful to ourselves.
They promote sex, gambling, drugs, gangsterism through music but I have no problem with them.

E.P: What project are you involved in music wise?

Answer: I have several albums including about eight albums with akeem lasisi of punch news papers of course you were at LNG CORA BOOK Party and you saw me on stage with the poets. I am the must featured musician with Nigerian Poets  akeem lasisi was the first person to take poetry to television with me the first one about 15 years ago. we released critical speaking through mania  records,  my band as always be on tour  South Africa, central Africa and the  US and my music is always online just google my  name you will get my music, the current programme  we release a new album today  titled RORA it is online  we play every first Thursday  at freedom park in Lagos

E.P: Your altitude to Government patronage of the art?

Answer: I am a great critic of every government in Nigeria because there are anti-people but the last seventeen years of  civilian rule as been the worst, anybody expecting something from Nigeria government   is deceiving  himself.
We have politicians  whose  recurrent  expenditure is greater than  the capital expenditure they have been the  most dangerous we have seen in Government APC and PDP are the same, no ideology   the same sets of people.

E.P: What inspires you when choosing your songs?

Answer: I don’t drink when I want to  write my songs/ music, my muse brings my music to me            because of things that happens around me so the inspiration just come naturally from my environment through my muse.

E.P: What is your message to your fans?

Answer: I will tell them to fight on because what I see all around me is suffering strangulations and lies everywhere, if you listen to my music you would see me sing about our struggle as a people under oppressive government and policies.

says miss oluwapelumi sunmola  the museum  manager

E.P: what is the intention of establishing this museum?
The intention behind the establishment is to project the image of the late Afrobeat King, human rights artist, instrumentalist and great pan Africanist Fela Anikulapo Kuti to the African people, those in the diaspora and the world.
So that the idea, philosophy and free thinking that he stood for will not be in vain, and will be known by all who visit the museum, there are lot of things people don’t know about Fela.
E.P: How has the patronage been?
Honestly the museum is a busy place due to Fela’s struggle, and is music.
The museum is fully booked everyday of the week from all over the world, for example last week we have visitors from Kenya and they also interview Seun Anikulapo Kuti.
E.P: How is the funding for the museum generated.
The building was turned to a museum by the Fashola Administration and it is sustained by entry fees we generate, that is 500 per person, that is how we raise our funds.
E.P: For organizations that may want to arrange tours to this place (museum) what does it entails.
Our own normal fee is 500 per person even when they are thirty or hundred the fees is 500 per person.
E.P: what has been your experience been the Manager of this museum.
It is an experience that I never dreamed of, for instance I didn’t know much about Fela personally but been the Manager I have learnt a lot about his personality, dedication to the truth, right of the common man, and superiority of the African race. It has also helped me in fostering good relationship with certain people I never knew I would meet, been the manager has also exposed me to further bring into use my course of study which is Public Administration.
Honestly, without been immodest it has helped me academically and financially.

ANYBODY THAT IS INTERESTED IN BECOMING A SUPERSTAR IN ACTING DANCE AND MODELLING SHOULD CONTACT ME ON.... SAYS THEATRE ICON. CHIEF SEGUN REMI (POPULARLY KNOWN AS KANRAN).

Question: Sir how did you embrace acting and your educational background.
I can say my own was like a bit extraordinary, I got a parent who was a magician who travels to Europe and America to perform, he also perform for top government officials in Nigeria, my mother love to sing and dance a lot though a medical practitioner we had a big black and a white box in our house, in the evening people gather in our living room to watch one or the other plays on WN TV not NTV or NTA.
So one day I wanted to know how grown up people could enter into the box so I used a knife to open it and disconnect wires and small iron which ended in my destroying the box in which I love watching America soap operas.
For the educational aspects: I follow my brother Yemi Remi to centre for African studies at university of Lagos there was no theatre arts department then in UNILAG it was from there that I left for the university of Ibadan to study Cinematography and university of Ife. It was while working as a freelance artist that I meet the doyen of Nigeria theatre Chief  Hubert Adedeji Ogunde who watch me in Femi Phillips Script, the late Femi Phillips was the husband  of Mrs. Idowu Phillips popularly known as Mama Ranibow. He ogunde invited me to some of his plays.

Question: The name Karan How did you come about it.
We where told to produce a play for the opening of Lagos state Television and radio Lagos this was during the time of Alh Lafeef Jakande unfortunately our leader Femi Phillips Passed on and the cassette we recorded was burnt, we where told to go and shoot another one in Ajido Badagry so all Femi Phillips role fall on my shoulders but people where not happy, we were told to produce a two hours epic Yourba play for independence known as Alafin Karan which gave me my break through  and brought  me to limelight in acting but since 1971-1972 till now  I have been part of numerous stage productions, television series, home videos and soap operas, Alafin Kanran became my name.

Questions: Sir of recent not much has been happening to your acting career, so what has been keeping you away.

I would like to disagree with you because of        recent I just completed a 58 TV episode with Galaxy television and another one in English is about to the start soon in Lagos here, what I do is write my scripts, books and pass it to people that we perform them I want to bring new artist not the always re-circled ones even in modeling. Anybody that is interested in becoming a superstar in acting, dance and even in modeling can get in touch with me, we want a break from the constantly re-circled ones.
Some we bring their scripts and want you to act as a millionaire and would bring a passat car, their own guinea brocade cloth for you and a one room and parlour for you in a millionaire scene which does not portray  the image you want me to act, so I refuse to be part of this Charade. Some would bring the cigarette paper as a tip for commissioner of police.
Later I stated producing films of my own and started having problems with marketers, films that sold 30,000.00 you start to get funny stories then problem of piracy, is the pirate more than the Government?
So I want to start with upcoming artist who are interested in becoming superstars to contact on me 08033200625.
Am a foundation member of NANTAP, Defunct ANTAP, GOND, AGN i also established Segun Remi Foundation to cater for the arts.

Question: What other Projects are you involved in concerning the arts apart from the above.
In 2010 one Chief Makinde gave us 76 hectares of land along Oyo/Iseyin road in Oyo state. What I have in mind is an art city the project is massive I can’t do it alone, where we can have a place for art, chalet for artist, and art resort, film village set up, school for cinematography. A typical African village setting a shopping mall. A production suit and seminar hall schools for theatre arts etc but since 2010, we have not seen anybody  that want to partner with us on this project, federal government and states do not support the art , as they support sports.  But kudos to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Raji Fashola and  Ogbeni Raufu Aregbesola. It is a sad development to note that no local government has a theatre auditorium for performance of plays from Friday to Sunday in the whole federation. Of course they have killed stage production completely.
That is why so many theatre art icons die like chicken and cockroaches.

       Question:  Message for your fans

I appreciate my Fans, but I tend to fight some of them because they buy pirated copies and this does not help me for my efforts, they should look out for a good production I beg them in the name of God to stop buying pirated copies, so I can come back to performing on one on one, shoot a film again, so I can invite them to the  National theatre again. Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode has promised to established seven theatre auditorium in 13 Local Governments L.C.D.A in Lagos State

ANS: My forage into acting, i will tell you this is my forty years in acting, i started acting in February 12 1977 we started with Stage play that is during festac 77 i have done lots of Stage Production, Radio Drama, Television Drama and has i speak to you am on location of a T.V Soap Opera.
E.P: Your view of Nollywood?
ANS: Nollywood is a child of circumstances it came out of nothingness but there was something on ground the cinema culture in Nigeria spans over sixty years for those of us who were of age we know some names like Chief Hubert Adedeji Ogunde, Moses Olaiya ( Baba Sala), Adeyemi Afolayan ( Ade-love), Dr Ola Balogun that was the good days of cine-culture we go to the cinemas to watch good movies later Foreign exchange became a tug of war then the experiment was carried out the Late Mujideen Alade Aromire even Chief Sunday Akinlola ( Feyikogbon) experimented, they recorded their drama play on video tapes using domestic cameras. There was no name to it, it was purely the journalist that gave it the nomenclature of Nollywood just like Hollywood in America and Bollywood in India but it has come to stay although it has become an all comers affairs.
E.P: In terms of what?
ANS: I mean untrained hands even when the masters ( professionals) are still on ground not just Nollywood entertainment is the biggest employer of labour we are moving on.
E.P: What is your reaction to Government attitude towards the arts?
ANS: Government Patronage is still a little bit discourage for instance if the President wants to visit Lagos State what they do is to get the State art council troupe to dance on the airport tarmac under the scorching sun to welcome the President to Lagos or any state, that is government idea of arts and culture for us in the Practitioner

within the segment of the industry, what we want is for the government to give us a regulatory body so that what happens in the industry presently can be avoided.
E.P: Like what sir?
ANS: What am saying is that with government regulatory body it won't be for retired area boys, prostitute, retired garage boys e.t.c.
