MR OLAREWAJU OMIYINKA AKA BABA IJESHA WAS
THE FIRST YORUBA COMEDIAN TO SHOOT A FILM ON IFA. IT WAS TITLED “IFATHEOLOGY”
In the highly successful film
written and produced by Ambassador Olarenwaju Omiyinka Baba Ijesha comically
explodes in this highly funny film using his equally funny mastery of Ifa to
make viewers laugh their hearts out, while giving his own interpretation to IFA
CORPUS and rendering comical statement that leaves his viewers to incur
laughter.
With Pa Peter Fatomolola has his tutor (Ifa priest) was teaching him (Baba Ijesha ) the rudiments of Ifa, He ask him to render a recitation of the Ifa he was been thought which he replies the Ifa priest by calling it “IFA SAMSON” and it went thus “Ifa Ori mi re O, Aye mi re o” (meaning- Ifa this is my head, Ifa this is my chest), he continues “Ifa listen to me, tinko lo saw o lafun (it is the dry meat that is friendly with yam flour or a palatable result)”, “It is a bigger akara that goes in association with garri, Oku le leja nta (meaning- It is in death that the fish seller sells hs/her fish, without magi the
soup will not be sweet)”, If we sweep the inside of a house and the outside it is the refuse dump that we send it to, An Agbada must not have a polo which gave birth to amala (yam flour) when he was coming to mother earth it was gbegiri soup shirt he wore, Ifa this is my head (Paying obidence), what did amala tie on his leg? It was stock fish that amala tie on his leg. Ifa listen to me (Paala) stock fish is what Ifa tie on his leg. He ends this recitation of Ifa by saying I am a Christian.
This film without doubt was a
pacesetter in the annals of Yoruba comedy having truly exploited the Yoruba
belief (cosmology) inventing it with comic clothing laced with unquenchable
laughter. It was the pacesetting role of the film “Ifatheology” that give rise
to many films in Yoruba film circle that has similar title, sub-title or
characterization in outlook but not with the deep language of comedy exhibited
by Baba Ijesha.
